Leven Reichel Rote is buried at the Woodward Hill Cemetery in Lancaster City, Lancaster County, PA. He died in his 34th year on 16 April 1889.
Leven was born 23 November 1855 in Pennsylvania to George T. and Anna Rote.
The 1860 Census shows young Leven at home with his parents and seven siblings. He had one sister, Anna L., and six brothers. His brothers are: George F., Amos F., Joseph F., Jacob E., and James A. His father was a master cabinet maker.
The 1877 City Directory shows Leven's mother as a widow residing at 102 South Queen Street. Leven lived with her. His place of employment was listed as Rote & Sons, Undertakers. The business was also at 102 South Queen Street. His brother James lives there as well and lists his occupation as coffin maker.
The 1880 Census reveals him living on South Queen Street in Lancaster with his mom Anna, his wife Anna, their 13 year old daughter Annie and Albert Foltz, a boarder. Leven was an undertaker.
The 1888 City Directory (shown at left) includes Leven R Rote as an undertaker at 155 South Queen Street. It also shows Amos C. Rote at 350 and 352 North Queen Street.
The 1896 City Directory lists his widow, Anna F, as residing at 611 West Orange Street. It also lists A.C. & Sons (A.C., John F. and Harry C.) as undertakers at 153 South Queen Street. The 1899 Directory further identifies A.C. & Sons as undertakers and embalmers. A.C. is Amos C.
The symbol on Leven's tombstone is that of the Masons.
